Trackosaurus is reimagining formative assessment for early education. Its platform helps teachers build a clearer picture of each child’s developmental progress by combining self-directed assessment games with structured classroom observations. It is built for real-world settings, including South African schools where connectivity, language and device constraints shape the design from the start.
When Crintus & Co began working with Trackosaurus, the organisation already had a working platform. It had passed through several development teams, each leaving behind different architectural patterns, coding styles and approaches to state management, interface components and infrastructure. The product worked, but its foundations were fragmented.
The task was not to rebuild or restart. It was to provide consistent technical leadership, consolidate those foundations and keep evolving the platform as Trackosaurus’s assessment model and practical needs developed.
Our approach
Crintus & Co took technical responsibility across the mobile application, backend services and cloud infrastructure. This has been an ongoing partnership, not a one-off build. The work spans product development, architecture, infrastructure, deployment, troubleshooting and the translation of educational assessment requirements into dependable software.
The approach treats the app, assessment games, data and infrastructure as one system rather than separate projects, making the platform more coherent and maintainable while continuing to deliver new capabilities.
What we delivered
A more dependable technical foundation
Crintus & Co rebuilt the platform’s cloud infrastructure and deployment setup using managed AWS services for authentication, APIs, data storage, file storage and serverless processing, with separate development, staging and production environments.
The result is a platform that is easier to develop, deploy and maintain, with less operational risk from inconsistent infrastructure and development practices.
Offline-first and multilingual operation
Trackosaurus runs in classrooms where reliable connectivity cannot be assumed. Crintus & Co built offline-first workflows that store important app and assessment data locally and synchronise it when a connection returns.
The platform also gained multilingual content support, helping Trackosaurus adapt learning and assessment material for the South African contexts where it is used.
Assessment data that combines games and teacher knowledge
The platform brings together two complementary sources of insight: data from children’s assessment games and structured observations recorded by teachers.
Crintus & Co built the systems that capture, process and present this information, including assessment-session tracking, scoring, historical progress and skills measured across multiple concepts. Together, these turn individual interactions into a clearer and more useful view of each child’s developmental journey.
Games, hybrid assessment and child speech
Trackosaurus’s self-directed assessment games are designed with education experts to reveal children’s strengths in ways that align with local cultural contexts. The games provide direct assessment evidence while giving children an engaging way to demonstrate what they know.
Its hybrid tools combine those direct results with teachers’ structured observations. Trackosaurus is developing the user experience and data presentation to help teachers reconcile differences between the two sources and turn them into useful next steps for each child.
Trackosaurus is also exploring child-speech assessment through keyword spotting for letter recognition, automatic speech recognition for passage reading and conversational AI for reading comprehension. This research must work within practical constraints including limited language resources, mobile devices and unreliable connectivity. Crintus & Co’s contribution in this area includes work on complex ASR challenges, while keyword spotting and conversational AI form part of Trackosaurus’s wider research programme. Since taking technical ownership, Crintus & Co has supported the platform across mobile development, backend services, cloud infrastructure, assessment analytics, offline synchronisation, multilingual content, release processes and ongoing reliability work.
